Youth Services: Where the Magic Begins

If you ever need a reminder that the future is bright, just spend a moment with one of our Rotary youth programs. I promise you—the magic is real.

Every great story begins with a spark, and in Rotary, that spark often starts young. Through programs like Early Act First Knight,  InteractRotary Youth Exchange (RYE), Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), and Rotaract, we’re not just mentoring future leaders—we’re shaping global citizens, igniting potential, and creating lifelong bonds that transcend borders.

In elementary schools across our district, over a dozen Rotary clubs bring the values of the 4-Way Test to life through Early Act First Knight or similar programs. These aren’t just lessons—they're foundations of character. Imagine the ripple effect of a young child learning honesty, fairness, goodwill, and benefit to all—those are the leaders we want for tomorrow.

Fast forward to high school... Across 60+ campuses, 37 Rotary clubs sponsor Interact clubs, and let me tell you, the results are powerful. Teachers and counselors often rave about “those Interact kids”—the ones who go above and beyond, who find their voice and learn how to lead with heart. The ones who show up early, stay late, and lift up their schools through service.

One Interact advisor recently told us:

“The most exciting and inspiring thing about leading Interact is seeing these kids evolve throughout the year and gain leadership skills through the various District activities they plan and coordinate. Honestly… they keep me YOUNG!”

But the magic doesn’t stop there. Rotary Youth Exchange opens a portal—yes, a portal—to a bigger, brighter world. Students become ambassadors, not just of their home country, but of peace, understanding, and friendship. Host families often say they’re forever changed by the experience, and many welcome students year after year.

One Rotarian shared:

“Watching these students change so drastically in less than a year, bonding with kids from different countries, religions, and backgrounds—it was a window into the world. We all belong to this world, not just our towns or countries. That’s the magic of Rotary.”

Then there’s RYLA—an annual weekend camp where high schoolers are immersed in leadership challenges that test and transform them. They arrive curious and unsure and leave confident, connected, and ready to face anything.

As they grow into young professionals, Rotaract provides a community to keep the momentum going. A space to serve, lead, connect—and yes, to continue that Rotary magic. A longtime Interact advisor who helped start the first middle school club in our district said it best:

“I never imagined I’d be given the opportunity to help guide so many amazing students. Seeing them grow in leadership, independence, and collaboration—it’s the most rewarding part of my career.”

This is what Youth Services Month is all about. Investing in tomorrow by believing in today. Whether you're mentoring an Interactor, hosting an exchange student, or just sharing your Rotary story—you are helping to shape the next generation of peacemakers, changemakers, and community builders. Let’s keep the magic going!
