what is a "rotary district governor"?

Serving as District Governor is an incredibly enriching, life-changing experience.  The District Governor is nominated by the Clubs in his or her District to represent Rotary International, and to serve as an officer of Rotary in their district.  In addition to visiting each club in our district, Governors are given wide flexibility to make a lasting impact on Rotary in their region. In the build-up to their year, Governors assemble their own teams of volunteers, including Assistant Governors, Committee Chairs, and District Resource Leaders. And during their year, the Governor manages committees, provides fiscal oversight, schedules events, leads training programs, and develops new initiatives within the District. As the sole representative of Rotary International in District 5890, the Governor is given tremendous latitude while acting in the best interests of the over 60 Rotary clubs within our region.  Each District Governor serves a one year term, but in most districts, that individual fills many roles in the lead-up to serving as District Governor.  For instance, District 5890 has a District Governor (current year), a District Governor Elect (the next year), a District Governor Nominee (the following year), and a District Governor Nominee Designate (for the next following year)

History of Rotary

Rotary started with the vision of one man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on February 23, 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships.

Over time, Rotary’s reach and vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Members have a long track record of addressing challenges in their communities and around the world.

History of rotary district 5890 (Harris & the 8 surrounding counties)

Yet, such was the case when the Rotary Club of Houston was founded, on November 1, 1912, and received charter No. 53, of the National Association of Rotary Clubs. Today, the Rotary Club Houston is one of the oldest clubs in Rotary.  Any consideration of the history of the present District 5890 of Rotary International, or of any aspect of Rotary in all of South Texas, for that matter, must begin with full appreciation of the enduring leadership of the Rotary Club of Houston.
...........
In 1915 when the Rotary Club of Houston was chartered, we were in Rotary District 12.  A "district" is a geographical area which includes many Rotary clubs.  As Rotary grew and new clubs were formed, more districts were added and their district number changes as you see with the district numbers listed below.  Since 1991, our greater Houston area district has been "District 5890".  Below are the names of the Rotarians that were selected by the Rotary clubs to serve as District Governor from 1915 to 2021.
We thank them for their leadership, compassion, dedication, and their dreams to make Rotary the outstanding service organization that it is today.  They truly exemplify Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self!"
